How to Set Up the GitHub Integration in 2 Minutes

Follow these simple steps to configure seamless background time tracking across your GitHub workspaces.

Step 1

Navigate to Integrations in TrackLabs

Log into your TrackLabs web dashboard, go to Settings > Integrations, and locate GitHub under the Engineering & DevOps directory. Click "Connect".

Step 2

Authorize OAuth 2.0 Connection

Authenticate with your GitHub administrator account. Grant TrackLabs read/write access to synchronize task entities, member rosters, and work logs.

Step 3

Map Projects & Workspaces

Select which GitHub workspaces and projects should sync with TrackLabs. Assign team members to corresponding client contracts.

Step 4

Launch Timer & Track Seamlessly

Open the TrackLabs desktop client (Windows, macOS, or Linux). Mapped GitHub tasks immediately appear in the task dropdown ready for 1-click tracking.

How Distributed Teams Use TrackLabs with GitHub

A frictionless lifecycle from backlog assignment to final payroll disbursement.

1. Task Assigned

Project manager creates milestone or sprint item in GitHub and assigns it to a team member.

2. 1-Click Tracking

Employee selects the assigned GitHub task in the TrackLabs desktop stopwatch and begins focused work.

3. Telemetry Recorded

TrackLabs logs active seconds, app/URL engagement, and optional proof-of-work blurred screenshots.

4. Timesheets Synced

Verified session hours automatically populate client invoices and synchronize back to GitHub worklogs.

Permissions & API Scopes Required

TrackLabs strictly operates on the principle of least privilege. We only request OAuth permissions essential to sync tasks and record work session durations. We never access private billing data, credentials, or unrelated workspaces.

read:tasks

Allows TrackLabs to import task titles, milestones, and status fields from GitHub.

write:worklogs

Allows TrackLabs to post time tracking summaries and session durations back to GitHub tasks.

read:users

Matches GitHub workspace user emails with TrackLabs team members for automatic routing.

offline_access

Maintains continuous background synchronization without requiring daily re-authentication.

Known Capabilities & Limitations

Designed for engineering, agency, and enterprise reliability. Here are technical parameters to keep in mind:

Subtask Depth

TrackLabs syncs parent tasks and up to two levels of subtasks from GitHub. Deeper nested hierarchies are categorized under the immediate parent.

Offline Buffer Window

Time tracked while offline is buffered locally on the endpoint client and pushes to GitHub immediately upon network reconnection.

Rate Limiting

Sync occurs via webhooks in real time. Batch historical imports are scheduled to comply with GitHub's standard API rate limits.

Common Troubleshooting Steps

Quick resolutions for frequent configuration questions.

Issue: Tasks from GitHub are not showing in the TrackLabs desktop app

Solution: Ensure your user email in GitHub matches your TrackLabs login email. Then, in the TrackLabs desktop app, click "Refresh Tasks" or check Settings > Integrations in the web portal to confirm the project mapping is active.

Issue: OAuth token authorization shows disconnected or expired

Solution: API tokens may expire if administrative credentials change in GitHub. Navigate to Settings > Integrations, click "Reconnect GitHub", and re-authorize the OAuth connection.

Issue: Logged hours are not updating in GitHub worklogs

Solution: Verify that your integration configuration has "Two-Way Worklog Sync" toggled on. If two-way sync is active, worklogs push every 15 minutes or upon task timer completion.

GitHub Integration FAQs

TrackLabs synchronizes bidirectionally with GitHub. Once connected, your active projects and task lists appear inside the TrackLabs desktop app. When team members track time, their work sessions, activity levels, and optional screenshots are linked directly to those tasks.
